David Zwirner 20th Street

New York, NY
Completed - 2013
30,000 sqft
Type: Commercial
Role: Sara Lopergolo (Design Partner, Selldorf Architects)

Having worked with the David Zwirner Gallery primarily on retrofitting existing spaces into refined contemporary art galleries, the firm welcomed the opportunity to design a new, 30,000 SF ground- up gallery in West Chelsea.

The focus was on driving the design and development of the project from initial planning to completion, with a major emphasis on the façade design. The goal was to balance the planar concrete surface with the rhythmic arrangements of the punched teak window openings.

The five-story concrete structure has an exposed concrete façade. The design team chose to use a board-formed concrete because it enabled the façade to be both rough and refined. This material allowed the façade to resonate with the neighboring industrial structures while providing an elegance and craftsmanship that created a unique and sophisticated identity for the gallery.
